Man Brain Dead After Old City Beating

A 23-year-old man is brain dead after being attacked and beaten in Old City early Saturday morning.
The attack happened on the sidewalk in front of the old Second Bank of the United States building around 2:30 a.m. Sources say the victim, who was with a couple of female acquaintences, tried to hail a cab at the intersection of 4th and Chestnut. The cab already had another group inside. The victim yelled to the driver to turn off the light since the cab was full. The suspects thought the victim was yelling at them and got out the car. Police say three Middle Eastern men in their 20s began beating the man.
The assault was halted by a group of nearby park rangers, who gave the injured man first aid while the suspects fled the scene.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to Jefferson University Hospital, where he was hooked up to an automated external defibrillator. He is listed as being in very critical condition.
Police are looking for a maroon Mazda 626, with a model year in the early 2000s.
